Kate's Say
Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Hi there, we are updating our Blog offering so I've decided to retire Kate's Blog to make room for my new Blog. We are still developing our new Blog section but when it is live, you will find it on CareerOne.com.au. In the meantime, thanks for reading and for all the comments posted since the blog began in 2006.
Kate.

Rest, re-charge and refocus Monday, December 17, 11:10 AM This is the last working week of the year for many people. Time to celebrate, rest and forget working - well, almost. Tis the season of itchy feet Tuesday, December 4, 10:17 AM Employers better ask Santa for new staff as new research shows many people are actively planning a job change in the New Year. How to alienate your staff in 30 seconds Friday, November 30, 8:17AM From one employer branding disaster to another - what can Channel Nine be thinking?

About this Blog
Written by the Editor of careerone.com.au, Kate Southam, this blog will look at the wide range of issues that surround employment, job hunting and careers. It also features a "Your Say" area designed to give CareerOne readers a place to "post". The rules of Kate's Blog are pretty simple. Opinions and real life stories are very welcome. Swearing and defaming or vilifying others are not. For those who have not visited our website before, in addition to being the Editor of careerone.com.au, Kate also writes the newspaper column, Ask Kate, which is published in News Limited newspapers around Australia every week and also online.

University - one of many options Friday, January 18, 12.15PM At nine o'clock on Thursday night, 76,000 apprehensive school leavers across Australia logged on to the web to discover whether they were one of the successful 60,000 to be offered a place at their chosen university. Getting started on New Year resolutions Friday, January 11, 1.30PM Getting started on New Year resolutions, particularly career-related ones, can seem much harder work than when you actually made them - possibly while holding a glass of champagne in the early hours of a Tuesday morning. Beating the New Year blues Wednesday, January 2, 12.30PM The party is well and truly over, and apart from a few lucky people, who have extended leave, most of us have been forced to get over our New Year's Eve hangovers and head back to work.

Job Network
November 1, 2007 6:50 am
Kate, you wrote in your Blog that no one had spoken about the Job Network in this election. Well, they must have heard you as the 7:30 Report on the ABC did a really good program on the topic.

Job Network
October 30, 2007 12:05 pm
I agree with your recent Blog about the general silence on the job network. How strange. For a little history lesson, Centrelink was introduced in 1997 replacing the old Commonwealth Employment Service but also putting the Departments of Social Security, DEET and Austudy under one roof.

Negative feedback
17 Sep 2007 14:56:19
How does everyone handle negative criticism when submitting an application? It's just that I find the following incident very confusing. One potential employer rang me to complain about my resume.

Childcare training
16 Sep 2007 21:23:25
I am also a mum of 46-years-old and looking to re-educate myself in the childcare industry and finding it very hard in SA to find somewhere other than TAFE.

Passport request
15 Sep 2007 19:36:00
Kate, I have been asked by recruitment agencies to bring my passport. I am a fourth generation Australian, born and lived here all my life.

Is education a barrier?
23 Aug 2007 12:04:19

Hi. Has anyone out their had problems getting employment. After Educating themselves to a higher level?

Salaries in ads
Friday, 24 August 2007 7:04 PM

Hello Kate, I enjoy your weekly articles in the Leader newspaper. I wanted to pass on my agreement to employers advertising the salary range in their job advertisements.

Strange acronyms
25 Aug 2007 15:22:04

Hi Kate. I've recently graduated and am looking for a job, but am confused as to all the different acronyms...

Some friendly advice from a recruiter
27 Aug 2007 15:34:37

Hi Kate. I read a few moments ago a comment by a contributor naming him or herself "Exposure of Shame". In his/her contribution he/she informs us there are qualified persons in the market who have not gained employment and it is because of this we should feel some sense of shame.

Previous discussion topics
Irritating co-workers Re: your Blog on Monday about the different ways of getting under the skin of colleagues, I work in the automotive industry and I find an annoying habit, in a couple of colleagues, is talking loudly, non-stop profanities and sexism.
Including salaries in job ads Dear Kate, As the Director of Mitchell Morley Employment, an employment agency, I wanted to add some comments to your reader's salary frustration in today's Manly Daily.
Be proud of your educational achievements I have just been reading Kate's Blog extensively, after submitting a question regarding my long-term inability to secure a role in marketing, despite having a degree majoring in marketing, and eight years of (regrettable) sales experience.
