Review:
As the title implies this book is aimed at improving the navigation skills of the travelling public with the use of the satellite based Global Positioning System.

It is a very comprehensive treatise on the use of the GPS system, not only for vehicle navigation but for other navigation uses as well, eg Geocaching. It not only covers the mechanics of using the GPS receiver in navigation but also goes into the basics of the GPS system and how it works. The GPS receiver manual is still required for the basic operation of the unit itself. This is not covered as each different receiver has its own method of operation.

The use of maps is covered in great detail including scanning your own maps so that the GPS waypoints or tracks may be plotted on them in a computer or they may be used as a moving map in a laptop computer or PDA coupled to the GPS receiver. The use of maps in navigation without a GPS is also covered in case the GPS receiver malfunctions.

There are 192 pages (25cm X 17.5cm soft cover) containing 15 chapters. I will list the headings of the chapters to give an idea of the breadth of coverage in the book.

They are as follows:

1. Why GPS? 2. How GPS Works? 3. Maps, Grids and Datums. 4. GPS in Practice. 5. GPS Equipment. 6. Using a Computer with a GPS Receiver. 7. GPS and PDAs. 8. Moving-Maps: computers and maps on the move. 9. Setting up a Vehicle for GPS Navigation. 10. Planning a Trip. 11. Out in the Field. 12. Other fun things to do with a GPS Receiver. 13. Quick Reference Guide. 14. Appendices. 15. Index.

As can be seen from the list this book covers a wide range of subjects for using a GPS. It is easy to read and explains everything in easy to understand terms which makes it ideal for everyone to use.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to use a GPS, whether for vehicle navigation, bushwalking, geocaching or other non navigation uses such as setting up a go-to telescope so it knows where it is on the face of the earth. Or maybe you just want to know how the GPS system works and what it can be used for. This is the book for you.
