The book covers a huge amount very well, including information on setting up, backing up to CD-ROM, printing and going ‘wireless’. “Linux for Non-Geeks” is the perfect start for virtually anybody wanting to give Linux a try, whether you are a student, business, enthusiast or otherwise. The book comes with 2 CDs that contain a complete version of Linux based on Red Hat’s Fedora Core, along with useful free programs that include everything you need to surf the web, send email, create documents, view photo’s, burn CDs, and more. (Nothing more to buy!) Rickford, a self confessed computer operating system maniac for over 20 years (starting back in the Commodore/Atari days), communicates with an affable style that has all the technical detail you need to make things work, though is effortless to follow and comprehend. A sample of the chapter headings include; Becoming a Penguinista (Welcome to the World of Linux), A New Place to Call Home (Getting to Know the Desktop), More than Webbed Feet (Doing the Net with Linux), Tux Rocks (Music á la Linux) and Penguins Back at Work (Getting Down to Business in Linux) to name a few (of the 20 chapters). All in all, a thoroughly unique and approachable guide to getting your feet wet with Linux that comes with everything you need. It will have you up and running smoothly in no time at all. For anyone even slightly interested in getting to know Linux I highly recommend this book.
