Synopsis:	After a heavy night of drinking, Cahit, a 40-uear-old Berliner on a path of self-destruction, drives his car head-on into a building. He enters a psychiatric clinic where he is approached by a young, carefree woman, Sibel, who asks him to marry her…

Verdict:	‘Head-On’ is an uncompromising and unrelenting story about two damaged lovers, Cahit (Birol Ünel) and Sibel (Sibel Kekilli). After Cahit spends another night getting blind drunk, he drives his car head-on into a building. He ends up in a psychiatric clinic where Sibel rushes to him and asks him to marry her, the minute she hears he is Turkish. He thinks she’s crazy. She is desperate as she has just attempted suicide to find a way to escape from her traditional Turkish family and thinks marrying is another way to escape her family and the stifled life she leads since she failed at her suicide attempt. Cahit refuses to marry Sibel, but she is not taking his refusal lightly and pursues him and eventually convinces him it would be a marriage of convenience for both of them. He eventually agrees. And so starts their downward spiral. Cahit and Sibel both have self-destructive personalities, and seem doomed from the moment they meet. They are Turkish nationals living in Germany, fighting their heritage and trying desperately to find who they really are or at least coming to terms with whom they are. It is also a story about the culture differences and the difficulties immigrants face. This tragic story of Cahit and Sibel, is at times, almost too much to bear. Cahit is struggling as a widower; he finds solace in alcohol and is essentially almost a derelict. Sibel wants any escape from her strict family and after marrying Cahit, finds comfort in other men. They have an unspoken attraction to each other, realising that there is a common thread to their lives but neither will act on it. Events will cause them to realise their relationship is more than just one of convenience. ‘Head-On’ is very heavy and depressing yet a very powerful movie that shows the destruction of two people by their own hands. Most of the action takes place in Hamburg and then in Istanbul when Sibel makes an attempt to find herself aided by her cousin. There are many instances of drug use, violence, suicide attempts, rape and various abusive behaviour and so it is not a pretty movie nor for the faint-hearted and deserves its ‘R’ rating. ‘Head-On’ is full on.
