Culture & Arts

The Culture and Arts in South Australia page provides links to galleries and theatre companies, to make it easier to participate in the great cultural life going on in South Australia all the time.

While the origins of theatre are unclear, people have been going to the theatre since Ancient Greek times.  The Ancient Greeks enjoyed comedies satirising the leading figures of the day and tragedies that portrayed the frailty of the human condition.

The dramatic arts have come a long way since then, but we still love to go to the theatre, to laugh, cry and examine life.  A play is a great night out and there is plenty to see in South Australia.

There are many art exhibitions to be seen around Adelaide and South Australia.  Whether you’re interested in modern art, Aboriginal Art, paintings or textiles, there is always something to see and do.

It’s time to get out there and find out what’s on offer in South Australia!

Culture & Arts - http://www.theatreguide.com.au/

The Adelaide Theatre Guide has been South Australia's primary internet resource for live theatre since 1996 and is used extensively by local patrons and tourists alike.  Currently the site boasts over 500 visitors per day on average covering a wide variety of theatre including Drama, Musicals, Comedy and more.

In past years, the Adelaide Theatre Guide has taken an active role in promoting a range of events, including the Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Festival, professional, community and amateur events including sending a small group of reviewers to cover more than 85% of shows performed in Adelaide.

Adelaide Theatre - http://bakehousetheatre.com/

The Bakehouse Theatre is a charming intimate theatre that was first built to house a bakery in around 1880.  In around the 1950’s (together with the building next door) it transformed into a service centre for taxis.  Its life as a theatre began in the 1970’s under the name of the Red Shed.

The Bakehouse Theatre has won a number of awards for its efforts, including;-“Best Group”; “Professional Theatre”; “Best Play”; “Best Actress”; “Enterprise and Excellence”; “Oscart Award for the Festival of One”; “Best Drama”; “Less is More”;“The Light Year Award for its role as a Development House”; “Best Use of Multi-Media” and “Best New Script”.

Patrons of the theatre may rely on encountering a warm, welcoming atmosphere where there is no need to dress up, where they will usually run into someone they know in the industry and where you can even take your drinks into the theatre with you!  All in all, the Bakehouse provides a very good reason to get off that TV couch and into live theatre!
